I got to participate in a really cool thing yesterday. New Dos and New Shoes at the Collin County Children’s Advocacy Center. Under-resourced kids got new shoes and new hairdos for going back to school. Several hairdressers got together to provide these services.
There’s a lot of good in new shoes and haircuts for kids, but this went one step further. The 3rd good in this was the 3 radical haircuts, where they went from long to short. Locks of Love is great, and having done a few of these haircuts before, I thought surely we can find some rubberbands in this place. We did.
Brianna was next, a preteen, looking for a shorter cut. Again, we scrounged around for some rubber bands and got a lock to send off for donation.
Alisha, our last donor, was one of the kids mom. She had really long hair and showed an interest in donating hair, after she saw the other two ponytails on the table. Her hair was still a pretty decent length after the donation.
Being a hair stylist, I know how busy we can get, especially with appointments back to back. Donating hair is such a great way to bless another person with minimal work involved. The only things you need to have as a hair dresser to be prepared for that radical moment someone decides to go short is this:
- Plastic baggie
- Padded envelope
- Rubber bands
Why not be prepared? You have nothing to lose, only goodwill to gain.
Here’s the 3 major hair donation places and addresses:
Locks of Love - 10″ minimum
Locks of Love
234 Southern Blvd.
West Palm Beach, FL 33405-2701
Pantene - 8″ minimum
Pantene Beautiful Lengths
20770 Westwood Dr
Strongsville, OH 44149
Wigs for Kids - 12″ minimum
Wigs for Kids
24231 Center Ridge Road
Westlake, Ohio 44145
One more really cool thing was that my church allowed us to take all of our adjustable stools out of guest central to use for the hair cuts. Setting up a make-shift salon is no easy task. The stools worked perfectly! It’s amazing all of the good that can happen when people with really big hearts get together for good. It’s always great to be a part of working events like this. A big thanks to everyone that had any part in doing this. :)
Red-E To Go is a leave in conditioner that defrizzes, detangles and leaves an enormous shine in the hair after blown dry. I don’t retail much, but when I find a product that I cannot live without in my services, I like to pass it on to my clients. It is a $20 bottle, but pays for itself by refilling with distilled water when half full for a new full bottle.

Mullets for mankind? This is awesome! Steve V. raised an awesome amount of money for a friend’s baby adoption. Here’s an excerpt from his blog:
I have a mullet.
For the first time in my life.
It’s real, and it’s dirty. Tonight was awesome. We raised $2013 to help towards the Brown’s adoption. That means I have to wear this masterpiece for 12 days.
Thank you to everyone who came and donated, and a special thanks to Steve Hodges for providing experience and expertise in the cut (not to mention driving all the way from Frisco). On that note, thanks also to everyone who drove a good distance to come and watch. Thanks to Larissa for hosting, thanks to Jerod for shooting video, thanks to Amber and Larissa for shooting photos, thanks to Jody for blogging, and thanks to everyone else for being all you can be.
It was the weirdest feeling ever to have a room full of people and cameras, staring at me while it was cut. We have tons of photos and video, which I will upload as soon as possible.
I see Joe Dirt, looking back at me in the mirror…
Check out the blog post at iembracechaos.com for day 1 with dreads. I suppose they look real. Comments from people:
“I have to live with them for a while before I can decide how I feel about them.”
“Oh, that just rocks.”
“I dig it.”
“Oh my gosh. I think you’re the first in the family to have this, but it so suits you.”
“I am just surprised you were able to sit still that long to get it done!!!”
“You should make it permanent. Its a good look for you.”
“Cooollll doo. Miss Jamaica Island girl 2010 “
“you got dreadlocks?!?!?!?!?!”
“i wanted dread locks when i was in high school…i didnt know there were temp ones i would’ve totally done that…that’s awesome “
dreads & details:
- They look better after sleeping on them, looser and more like real dreads.
- Head does not itch.
Here’s a great hairstyle without the commitment of having to cut it off when you’re tired of it… temporary dreadlocks. This took approximately 1.5 hours, creating 46 individual locks. A short video of the actual process will be posted soon.
Temporary dreads are good for medium to long hair. Your hair should be a couple of days unwashed and the hairstyle will come out with your first washing. This style is good for a few days, up to a week, or as long as you don’t want to wash your hair.

Okay, so just one more. I had an idea of something crazy I wanted to do with my hair when it was long. My stylist, Steve Hodges, agreed to bleach and color a peace sign into my hair. Although we have all of the technical details worked out, there’s still the reality of my curly hair. When I wear my hair straight, the peace sign will look like a peace sign. When it’s curly, it will look like an abstract color blob, which really isn’t a problem for me, nor would anyone question it. In the mean time, maybe I can have Steve do this with my hair.

Another Facebook thing, Jody (not me), who posted on the PTCC wall that she wanted to donate her hair to Pantene, a place making free wigs for women going through cancer treatments, got her hair cut yesterday. Since I had done Locks of Love a while back, I wanted to go with her for support. She was looking for other people to do this with her, and I would do this again, but my hair will have to grow for a long time before I have enough. I was there while she got her hair cut. She had the same look on her face that I did. the ‘oh, crap, I’m really doing this’ look, with the undertone of ‘this is a great cause and so worth it’ look. This is such an awesome thing to do. If you’re interested in donating your hair, I will come support you too! Steve Hodges is our resident expert on hair donation if you need someone to do it.
